Wakulla Springs

Well, it was a fun-filled field trip with Abby's class today! Since their was no room on the bus for all of the parent chaperones (bummer!) I carpooled with three other moms. Mrs. Shaw says she hopes we enjoyed our peaceful time in the car alone ... guess her ride wasn't as relaxing! It was great seeing Abby experience Wakulla Springs again today, but for me, it was just as much fun to watch her interact with her buddies. Here she is hanging out with Emily and Aly.We had an AWESOME tour guide aboard the "Alligator" (a name we overlooked since Ranger Jeff was so personable, and since we WERE there to see alligators!)Not only was the scenery beautiful and the waters so clear ... We learned a lot, like "turtles enjoy hanging out at the SHELL station!" I knew there was a reason I liked Ranger Jeff ... his punnies! Abby and Nya ... they are good friends, and they team up each day during center time (there's an odd number of kids in the class, so Abby has always had a buddy).Well, here they are! The alligator pictures. Abby made me take photos of just about every gator we passed in the boat (we had to shout "woohoo" for Ranger Jeff to stop the boat each time) but I chose my few favorites. It's amazing how close they were ... and we must have seen about two dozen! This white-tailed deer wasn't using his little head ... being so close to the river. Ranger Jeff told our group of wide-eyed kindergartners exactly how the gators can grab the deers by their feet and pull them underwater. I've never seen five- and six-year olds listen so intently. Now I'm listening intently for Abby to wake up having alligator nightmares! More turtles. Hope they stay perched atop that tree trunk (incidentally, the one that's believed to have appeared in the Tarzan movie ... NOT the Disney version!)After the boat tour, Abby and her friends (here she is with Harlicia) searched the shore for little shells. Then we headed home. I love this shot of Abby and Emily, walking arm in arm!

The Wheels on the Bus ...

Today Abby's class hits the road for their final field trip of the school year. I went to the first one, back in the fall, but haven't been to one since. So, I'll be following the bus (yes ... there's no room on it ... and might I say, thank goodness!) and meeting the group at Wakulla Springs. Should be a fun day:
Boat ride. FUN.
Fossils. NEAT.
Real alligators. OOOH!
Over 50 kindergartners. SCARY!
Time spent with Abby. PRICELESS.

Photos to follow in the next day or so. I'm sure I'll take a couple!

Every time a bell rings ...

... a mommy gets her wings! And that mommy is ME. It was our doorbell that rang tonight, courtesy of the UPS man, who was delivering my (err .. Abby's) wings for the much-anticipated fairy party. Oh let me tell you, I was excited! It is wrong to get this giddy about a six-year old's birthday party!?! I say NO. But you can say I've gone overboard if you catch me fluttering about the house wearing said wings! Now that would just be crazy people. That's where I draw the line!

(Oh ... did you guys get the "It's a Wonderful Life" reference in my post title?)

Have you met Shrek?

Of course you KNOW who Shrek is! Well, most of you probably do ... he's an ogre. But do you know he lives in our mailbox? I really never think twice about this (nor does John our mailman now) but I'm sure passersby give us a second glance. Shrek somehow ended up in our yard (a straggler from a nearby trashcan perhaps?), then was run over by the lawnmower ... I believe about a year ago now. He looks a bit worse for the wear (see the closeup shot above), but he's been sitting on our mailbox ever since. Sometimes he actually hangs out in the newspaper cubby, and sometimes he just suns himself atop the mailbox itself. Anyway, the kids always greet our green buddy when they run up and get the mail for us. Funny they like him so much, and they've never seen any of the Shrek movies. But in their playroom, they do have a figurine that Uncle Aaron (or maybe that was Auntie Jenn ... or some godparent type figure that likes to give us annoying things) gave them. It makes obscene noises! NICE. The one in the mailbox is more polite!

An Acceptable Alligator

Yep ... this is the only kind of "GATOR" we find interesting! If you read my post this morning, you knew Tyler was going to meet this little guy at school today, so I took my camera in to capture the moment for him. Another parent arranged to have our local "zoo" bring the gator in and do a "show and tell" sort of thing for just the kids in Ty's class. And, BOY did they enjoy it. They read books about gators, compared this one-year old creature to puppets and models of full grown gators, and of course ... they each got to touch the gator!Tyler was very tentative - can't say I blame him!

Nifty ... but EVIL!

I must admit ... I have a love/hate relationship with Cheez-Its! I love to eat them ... too much! So, I spent several minutes in the grocery store aisle the other day, debating whether we should purchase these, and ... well, Tyler made me do it (kind of)! But I must say, they are nifty. Not only a snack, but a teaching tool too! Abby and Tyler delighted in finding letters (Tyler) to form words (Abby), and we linked them together "like a crossword" (one of Abby's new favs!)The most applicable word there is "trouble" - what I get into when I open a box of Cheez-Its. I think there's something addictive in them! Sorry folks for the lack of posts recently ... we ARE here. We're just doing some spring organization and planning, and we're trying to keep ourselves semi-on track as we get set to begin our busiest month of the year. May ... the new December. That deserves a post all to itself. Maybe later - Ty and I are off to preschool. I think he gets to meet an alligator today! I'll take the camera.

Surprise!

Yippee! We pulled it off! If you know me, you know I have a VERY tough time keeping a secret. So, it's a major accomplishment that I was able to keep Dad's super birthday surprise for Mom under wraps! Way back in January, Dad got GREAT seats for "Wicked," the musical, in Jacksonville ... enough for all of us to attend, IF we could make it there. "You better believe we will," I said! I had heard awesome things about Wicked. So, on Friday afternoon, we left the kids with friends, then met Aaron in Lake City so we could all drive to JAX together. We felt like secret squirrels, as we rushed to get ready (in the room next door to Mom and Dad) and be downstairs when they left for dinner. We were all sitting there in the hotel lobby, with newspapers in front of our faces, and when they came in we dropped the papers and yelled "surprise!" Here's Aaron hugging Mom, while trying to high five Dad. I love Dad's expression: "Yep ... got her!"
We did a quick little champagne birthday toast with styrofoam cups (oops forgot nicer ones!) ...
... then we headed to a wonderful dinner at a restaurant called "Matthew's" in San Marco (thanks Dennis for taking pictures, as we were busy celebrating!) ... ... before hurrying off to the show with birthday gifts in hand! This picture was actually taken on our way in to Wicked ... you better believe these two witches are excited! And rightfully so, the show was GREAT!
Thanks Dad for coordinating everything. What a great way to spend Mom's birthday!

Busy Little Gnomes

Oh, we HAVE been busy little gnomes today! Tyler and I delivered several of Abby's birthday invitations, and she took the others to school today. I think our family members are the only ones who haven't offically received the notice. Let's see, can you read it here?
If not, here's the text itself (must be read in a very serious, yet fairy-like tone. To me ... this is sort of Irish sounding!):
------------------------------------------------

Greetings my Dear Fairy Friend,

I bring you grave news from the Enchanted Briar. An evil wizard has cast a spell and stolen my fairy magic! In fact, I’m told the wizard’s spell is wide reaching … possibly affecting all of the fairies in our great land! As you can imagine, I am heartbroken. A group of busy little gnomes was hard at work, planning a fabulous fairy festival in honor of my 6th birthday, I’m afraid my remaining powers are not strong enough to fight the evil wizard alone and restore the peace in time for my birthday celebration. I need your help!

Please meet me at Shamrock Park (across the brook in the land of Killearn) on Saturday, May 9th at noon. I’m told that’s where the evil wizard has hidden our fairy magic! My dear friend … I know we can reverse the spell in time! Please send a message as soon as possible to let me know I can count on your help.

Your friend -
Abby of the Enchanted Briar
-----------------------------------------------
How fun is this party going to be? I simply can't contain myself! We've already heard from a few little fairies who have agreed to help Fairy Abby reverse the wizard's spell. I came up with most of this wording on my own, but I "borrowed" the premise from a blogger on a party planning site. She said one of her daughter's friends made her mom jump in the car as soon as the invitation was received and drive across town to send word that she could help find the fairy magic! How cute! I think most of Abby's friends were lost at the word "grave" in the first sentence, but Abby says she read the whole note to them ... and gave them the gist (do you think this could have been: Come indulge my crazy mom ... she'll make us work for it with games and a hunt of sorts, but you'll get cake in the end!)

Our Little NO-bot

I either posted about this long ago, or meant to! The "nobot" is one of our many nicknames for Tyler, as he goes through phases where he uses the word "no" quite a lot ... and he says it VERY indignantly. We used to joke that the nobot jumped in our car at Roberts when I dropped Abby off in the morning, and stuck around until we got home and back in our morning routine (I personally think Tyler likes being shepherded by Abby, even if she does boss him around profusely!) Fortunately that wore off, because I was getting ready to drop the nobot off at the nearest intersection. Recently, the nobot has made appearances in "the big bed" late at night. Yes, this little whatever-he-is robotically shuffles across the house in the wee hours of the morning/very late at night and climbs in bed with us. He's very quiet when he gets to our room. We often don't know he has arrived, until...

He proceeds to sleep sideways, steal our pillows, kick us in the face, order us around (he's not awake ... he's sleeptalking) and reprimand us for putting our pillows in certain places, allowing our bodies to occupy more than an inch or two along the edge of the bed, etc. (huge crimes, huh!?!) It goes something like this:

Tyler/Nobot: NOOOOOO Mommy, NO!
Me: What Tyler? What did I do?
Tyler/Nobot: NOOOOOO Mommy, NO!
Me: Ty-Ty, go back to sleep ... we're fine.
Tyler/Nobot: Moooooommmmmy, your arm is in my way!
Me: But Tyler, it's under my pillow.
Tyler/Nobot: Nooooo! Move your arm Mommy.

So what do I do? I move my arm! This brings me to the whole getting Tyler back to his own bed discussion, and I didn't want to go THERE in this post. But, I just came across this nobot graphic again and thought now would be a good time to share it. Fortunately, Tyler's cherubic persona during the day nearly makes up for his nighttime alter ego. We had a great day together today. He cracked me up so much ...

A friend sent this photo from Tyler's school Easter Egg Hunt a few weeks back, and I thought I'd share it. I didn't have my camera handy that morning, but you should have seen our boy loading up his shirt to shuttle his eggs back to the communal basket. He wanted to keep hunting so bad, but he just couldn't hold all his finds! What a funny dude.

Reverse Earth Day

Well you think I could have come up with a good way to teach the kids about Earth Day and respecting the land we live on. But INSTEAD, we plucked leaves off the trees and used them for Abby's fairy party invites! I guess I'm not going to win any green awards this year! Crazy thing is we had a couple Earth Day activities planned, but I just didn't have my act together. I guess we were too busy tying invitation scrolls up with liriope and writing on dogwood leaves so they could serve as nametags. I can't wait to share the invitation wording with all of you, but I'm in a hurry now ... and we want Abby's little fairies (and their families) to read from the scrolls first. Tyler is playing "hooky" today (not really ... it's only preschool!) and we're off to the library and errands: a much-needed Mommy-Tyler day! Maybe we'll stop to pick up some litter or something to make ammends for stealing from Mother Nature yesterday!

Your Assignment: Fairy Treasures!

Okay grandparents (official and adopted ... that means you Judy!), great-grandparents, aunts, and godmothers. I have an assignment for you! I'm looking for "treasure" for Abby's fairy party (May 9th), and I'm guessing you might have some of these things at your houses that I could borrow. If not, I'm going to hit Goodwill, but I thought I'd try you first. Here are some ideas:
What I hope to do is have a tray of "treasures" that we'll use for that "guess which item is missing" game. I remember you doing this one for at least one of my birthday parties, Mom ... and it was always fun. Now, I obviously don't want the needle (above) ... just an old-looking thimble. Martha - I thought about the feathers in your garage (don't know if those are ones you want to keep). An old book would be hard to send, so Mom, I'm thinking you and Dad might have a smaller one that wouldn't stick like a sore thumb if it was missing (and you wouldn't have to send it). Some other ideas:
  • large antique button
  • old looking (not valuable) necklace or locket
  • big old ring
  • rusty old fork or spoon
  • baby rattle

I have the following already: small silver hand mirror, acorn, and a shell. Anyway ... thanks in advance for your help! Oh - remember, I'm still looking for those little plugs from OJ cartons, liquid creamer, Egg Substitutes, etc. so the girls can make "fairy rings."

Right now, I have about six plugs, and I need about a dozen. I know I will open at least one more bottle of flavored creamer before Mother's Day weekend, but unless I'm going to start buying a lot of OJ, then I might still be short. Send them my way if you have 'em. Thanks ... you ladies are the BEST!

Preschool Playpals

Tyler and his little friend, Hayden, are so cute together. Today they played dressup after "eating lunch" (I put that in quotes because there was far more silliness going on than eating!) ... and they looked so adorable, I had to take a picture. Boy! I should have taken a picture of what I walked in on first. Hayden had one of Abby's costumes on backwards ... an open-backed tap outfit I might add! I quickly helped her rectify that "wardrobe malfunction!" Oh, how much do you love this shot of Tyler with his guitar? I see shades of that naked guitar-playing cowboy from New York City. Only this one is a guitar-playing pirate, who has been known to run buck naked through the house. Thank goodness he didn't roll that trick out during his playdate with Hayden!

Off to the Science Fair ...

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, "we've" completed "our" first science project. That's right! Abby is off to the Science Fair today (she'll present her project to the judges this morning, then it will be on display tomorrow evening). Really, it was fun, but as I was applying vines with hot glue on the display board last night at midnight, I was kind of ...Just kidding! I wasn't REALLY going bananas. If you know me well, you I love stuff like this ... and it probably wouldn't surprise you that I can get a bit carried away. Abby and I worked together on this whole project (we did the majority of the experiment in Iowa during Spring Break) ... and she did a TON of writing in her log book and for the display. But alas, she had to go to sleep last night and that's when my creative juices get flowing. Here are Abby and Tyler checking out the finished product this morning. We were pretending to be judges - asking her questions about the experiment and results. Turned out pretty good. And her monkey dress matches the display (did you notice?).
Truthfully, we didn't need to do a Science Fair project this year. It's not required until 3rd grade, but Abby was excited about it. Several of her classmates did one, and it's great practice for when assignments like this ARE required. So we kept it simple. I was so proud of Abby's attention to detail and her understanding of the scientific method.
QUESTION:
"Do bananas ripen faster on the counter or in the refrigerator?"
HYPOTHESIS:
Abby thought the ones on the counter would ripen faster.
RESEARCH:
Yikes! We didn't do any, but we came up with a few things that Abby believed help form her hypothesis (the refrigerator is COLD ... brrrrr! ... and she eats a lot of bananas!). Then we added a cute monkey near that section to detract from our lack of research.
PROCEDURES:
We had this part down pat. While in Iowa, we took pictures each day and kept a chart going to document the bananas' ripeness. RESULTS:
Yep, she was right. The ones on the counter ripened faster. As Abby wrote, we did the experiment a second time just to be sure.
What did that leave us with? A whole "heckofalotta" bananas! So we made some banana muffins yesterday using the fully ripe bananas. I didn't upload those photos, but they are on the display board. I think making the muffins was one of Abby's favorite parts of the experiment. And when I was quizzing her about her "the least appealing part of the project" (this was one of the questions it said the judges might ask), she answered, "Don't you mean a-PEEL-ing?!" That's MY daughter! We'll update you later today or tomorrow on how she did today.
