Big City ... Big Fun!

Dennis and I escaped for a few days in late June to New York City. We left the kids with Grammy and Grandan in Orlando, then caught a flight from there to the city that never sleeps. Unfortunately, I hadn't slept much during the days leading up to the trip (getting everyone packed to leave ... and working on a video project!) so Starbuck's was our first stop at the airport. What a difference flying without children. You actually get to relax! If I hadn't just downed a Latte, I might have slept a bit!
But then I would have missed the GREAT view of Manhattan as we flew over the city! Amazing! (The camera was packed in our bag though ... sorry!) Dennis had traveled to NYC in January for business and stayed at a beautiful hotel called the New York Palace. So, he arranged for us to stay there too! And, to start our trip off in style, he had a towncar pick us up from the airport and take us into the city. What a guy!
My only surprise for Dennis was a lunch reservation at Grand Central Terminal at a fabulous restaurant called Metrazur. Grand Central was just a hop, skip and a jump from our hotel ... so we got there early and did a walking tour of the terminal (architecture, history, etc. - yes, we are nerds!) before lunch. A great view of the Chrysler building with Grand Central in the foreground.Dennis and I loved watching the constant movement of Grand Central from our table during lunch. I think if we lived near the city, Dennis and the kids would want to ride the train A LOT!After lunch, we walked, and walked ... and walked! Just looking around is so much fun. One stop on Dennis' list was The News building. This was used as The Daily Planet in Superman the Movie, so that's why Dennis is striking his best Man of Steel pose.We toured the New York Public Library, did a bit of window shopping, had some drinks and appetizers in Times Square ... and played cards in Bryant Park. This was probably one of the biggest surprises for me ... beautiful parks and open spaces, right smack dab in the middle of HUGE buildings. As we sat in the park, enjoying the very mild NON HUMID weather, we texted Aaron and thought about how cool it was that we were visiting NYC and he was visiting LA that weekend and that we were "chatting!"We thought Abby and Tyler would appreciate this site from our walk back to the hotel. It's not like any parking lot we have in Tallahassee...Dennis had made reservations at Tavern on the Green that night, so we braved a NYC cab ride (scary!) to get there, then we walked through the park and all around that night, enjoying the lights. Finally, we ended up in the hotel bar drinking Cosmos! What a view from our hotel room (30th floor) at night. St. Patrick's Cathedral was right below us. You can also see right down to Rockerfeller Plaza...The next morning we hit the subway early (and by the way, the stories about subway rats are true!) and headed down to catch the ferry. Ask us how we almost took the ferry to Staten Island instead of the one to the Statue of Libery and Ellis Island (that would have been my fault!)The view of Manhattan on our way to the Statue of Liberty was beautiful, but the city sure does look different without the WTC towers.Lady Liberty was a sight ... and I've spared you by NOT posting the shots Dennis made me take copying her pose! Again, Dennis and I are history nerds, so we really enjoyed listening to our audio tour about how the statue was constructed and unveiled many years ago! And our stop to see how people became American citizens at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum (also complete with audio tour) was fascinating. When we got home, Dennis pulled out The Godfather, Part II where Vito Corleone goes through the same thing. Dennis is pleading for the immigration officials to "please ..." let him into America! We stopped for lunch in Little Italy and had some GREAT New York style pizza on Mulberry Street. Then, we hit Broadway that night for a spectacular performance of Cry-Baby the Musical. We thought it was great (it had been nominated for 4 Tony awards), but we didn't know that it was actually ending its very short Broadway run. Oh well, it was a highlight of our trip (or at least, mine).
The next morning, we went to the "Top of the Rock" and took in a birds eye view of the city, especially the Empire State Building.
Then, we had a spectacular brunch at one of the best breakfast places in the city, Norma's, before walking through Central Park. We kept commenting that the kids would have LOVED the amusement park right in the middle of this huge park!

While we were ready to see our little guys ... Dennis and I thoroughly enjoyed our getaway. We're already talking about where we can go next!

Surf's Up Abby

Abby spent the week "Surfin' Through the Scriptures" at Vacation Bible School. A friend of ours is a member of the church that held this camp ... and boy, did Abby enjoy it. Each day she came home with great stories ... and wonderful crafts. Each little group had a surfer name (Abby's was Hookena) and traveled around to music, science, rec, art and mission. Here's a shot of Alex, Abby and Shelby "surfing" at the daily music assembly. I still have Beach Be Attitudes in my head!It was great for Abby to have a chance to hang out with some of the friends she has missed, like Shelby...

They did some free playing (Abby is on the far right doing bubbles and sidewalk chalk), but they also had a "rec time" each day. Abby overcame her fear of relay races when she and the rest of Hookena won a sock hop!

But, she had the best stories to tell about the science sessions (a.k.a. the Surfin' Sand Science Lab). The church did a fabulous job coming up with experiments with a science lesson, and they always related back to the bible message for the day. Here they were learning about cold and warm hearts ... how to treat people with kindness.

Using a hard boiled egg, on Wednesday they did a "forgiveness dive" to reinforce the "Be Attitude" Be Forgiving. And, here's Abby's friend Alex doing an experiment with a button and carbonated soda. Abby came home and described in detail how the bubbles in the soda helped the button rise up to the top of the glass, this after a toothpick pushed it down to the bottom. It's amazing how at five years old she understood this was demonstrating how we can help our friends by lifting them up (i.e. being kind) when something has gotten them down.
What a great week! Hopefully the Be Attitudes she learned this week will stay in her head for a long time ... especially Be Obedient!

Jumping Beans

Nanny has been dying to see a photo of our new trampoline (or "jumping machine" as she has called it). With help from grandparents and great-grandparents on both sides, we got this on Abby's birthday. The kids just LOVE bouncing around (and doing tricks). We're sorry photos hadn't made their way to the blog yet. If you know me, you know I must blog in consecutive order. I got back on the bandwagon right after Abby's birthday, so at some point, I'll "flashback" to all the great things that happened in April and May, including the morning of Abby's birthday when she discovered this new "toy" in the backyard!

Hot Doughnuts NOW!

Even a good Father's Day breakfast didn't stop our treat-happy kids from requesting Krispy Kreme Doughnuts after church. We figured it was a special day, and Dennis is always game for a doughnut. Plus, we love watching them roll on the conveyor belt and get a "shower" (that's what Abby says about the glaze) ...
Abby REALLY enjoyed her strawberry glazed doughnut ...

She considered taking an application and having them put her to work, although the doughnuts might not make it off the line if she worked there.
Tyler is REALLY good at making messes! He votes for it to be Father's Day ... every day!

Top Dog

In honor of their Daddy, Abby and Tyler wore their dog outfits to church on Father's Day. This was actually a coincidence, but Abby thought it was great (she loves a theme ... like her mama)! What will we do when Tyler doesn't want to wear smocking? He still doesn't mind, and I love dressing him in these cute little Jon-Jons. Notice - Tyler has taken to playing with his hair. This reminds me of my brother (his uncle), Aaron, who was always twirling his hair. Now, he had more, because bowl cuts were all the rage in the 70's. Tyler is in need of a haircut, so we'll see how much "twirling" he can do after the trim.

Father's Day

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to ALL of the dads in our lives!

The kids and I had big fun preparing for Father's Day ... and as you can see, it was a fun day. Unfortunately, we kicked thing off early, so Dennis didn't get to sleep in! But who would want to ... Chef Tyler was busy in the kitchen baking muffins that made the whole house smell great! Then, they surprised Dennis by waking him up with OJ, the newspaper (which we didn't give him a chance to read), and a HUGE bag of cereal from Sam's Club.
Tyler was so proud that he helped Mommy cook. We actually had to wake Abby up so we could start the festivities. Wouldn't it figure she would sleep in on Father's Day...
Abby made her Daddy's day with a Pizza-a-Month book. She made the pizza out of Magic Nuudles and all kinds of other "ingredients!" Then, she personally created each page and labeled it with the name of a local pizza place. Dennis has to "cash it in" each month to get the goods! June is the only out-of-town spot. We figured New York Pizza was in order during our long-awaited couple getaway in the Big Apple! July is a family lunchdate at The Loop (a restaurant near Dennis' office). Abby was so excited to present this gift to Daddy, along with a hose storage rack/roller, some workout clothes, and a picture frame. It was a fun day!

Just Like Daddy!

I got this idea from our favorite crafty magazine, Family Fun. The day before Father's Day, we dressed Abby and Tyler up in Dennis' clothes and took photos. Abby was "Work Daddy" ... I can't tie a tie to save my life. So, fortunately, Tyler was easier to dress in his role as Weekend Daddy ...
I just used these to make a card for Dennis. I said something like "It's clear to see the kids want to be JUST like you! Thanks for being such a great role model!" He seemed to like it, and the kids were tickled with the photos too.

YELLOW CAR!

No, we haven't traded in the Sienna for a yellow SUV! But we do LOVE to play "yellow car," the fun-for-the-whole-family game that's sweeping the nation!
Okay, I exaggerate! But, since we started playing this game back at least six months ago, we've gotten several friends and family members to join in. Look around when you're out on the road next. There are TONS of yellow cars! I bet, if you start playing you can't stop. I sometimes find myself screaming "yellow car!" to an empty backseat. If you want to play hard core, like us, give yourself extra points for yellow X-Terras or Hummers. Tyler and Abby will tell you, those earn you treats!

Not a baby anymore...

BOOHOO! My baby is growing up. Recently, we have been having to squeeze him into his seat at the table ... through the baby bar. Well, after Tyler got himself caught yesterday, I asked him if he thought he was ready to have Daddy remove the bar. He said yes, so today - with Tyler's help - Dennis readjusted the seat and put the bar away! Tyler promises there will be no cases of wiggle bottom at the dinner table. We'll report back on that one!

It's a Grand 'Ole Flag...

...it's a high flying flag!

Happy Flag Day All! Abby and Tyler enjoyed dressing like little flags today (this cute sundress finally fits Grammy!), and we actually had a mini-lesson on why the flag has stars and stripes, how to display it, etc. (thanks to Google for making us appear smart to our children!)

And, I couldn't help myself at lunchtime. I didn't have blueberries, but I improvised for this flag-themed fruit dessert! We had plans to paint our own flag on poster paper outside or draw one with sidewalk chalk, but our Father's Day preparations took too long. I think Dennis will appreciate the efforts tomorrow. We'll post some pictures!

I Scream, You Scream...

Ty screams for ICE CREAM! Tyler had his first ice cream cone last night ... and it was a hit! It just took him a year to finish, because he didn't want any of us to help him! Grandan, I tried your "I'm just evening it up" or "I'm pushing the ice cream down into the cone ... I'm not eating any!" lines, but he didn't buy it. We actually looked back at our pictures from a couple years ago, and it appears Abby's first cone was when she was about Tyler's age too. She's an old pro now ... lots and lots of practice at Chick fil A!
