She's a helper alright!

What's Dennis doing eating his Salisbury Steak with a ladle? Well, that's what Abby put at his spot when she set the table last night! The fork you see there had just been brought over, but when Dennis sat down to dinner he had a knife and a ladle. Guess I should have said all three utensils were needed, and I should have specified a teaspoon, as I got a serving spoon with a knife at my spot. To be funny (and so as not to bruise our sensitive gal's ego), Dennis actually tried eating with the ladle, but it just wasn't working... Funniest part of the story: after I went and grabbed the camera and dinner returned to normal, Abby said, "you know I was just joking!" What a stinker! But wait until she sees what I'm going to serve with one of her meals this weekend. Two can play at this game. Stay tuned!

100th Day of Kindergarten

I don't recall ever keeping track of things like they do in school now. Today was the 100th day of the school in Leon County ... therefore, the 100th day of Abby's kindergarten year! To start the day off, I really loaded Abby up with carbs (don't worry all you moms, there's usually some turkey bacon, egg, or yogurt at breakfast) in an effort to make the number "100" on her plate. The "1" on the far left is a piece of Strawberry Banana Bread, which the kids and I made the other day. And I did put some cream cheese on the "0s" - a mini cinnamon raisin bagel. In school, Mrs. Shaw had the kids use the counting skills (counting to 100 by 5s and 10s) they've been developing by stringing 100 Froot Loops onto yarn to make necklaces ... ... and they shared their collections of 100 items brought in from home. Abby had NO problem at all collecting 100 acorns in our backyard (the ones that weren't confiscated by our pesky backyard squirrels!) We also had to help Abby with an interview, featuring questions like, "I could balance 100 _____." (Abby said "napkins") And, in 100 years I hope to ______________." (Abby said "go into space") But our favorite was, "It would be too much work if I had 100 __________________. (Abby answered "brothers or sisters") Uh ... no kidding! At times I think TWO is too much!

WFMW: Themed Book Displays

This is the first time I've posted a Works for me Wednesday (WFMW) post, although I've read them countless times on fellow blogger's blogs. And, this actually isn't a true WFMW, because I haven't included "my idea" as a link on the official site (rocksinmydryer.net), mostly because I think it could be a derivation of something I started after reading a past WFMW. But, I think this idea has some merit, and I thought I'd share. For a couple years now, our family has kept a basket of books in the living room for the kids to peruse throughout the day. Their books are kept in their bedrooms, but sometimes you just want to grab a book and read while you're waiting for Mommy to get ready or something, so we keep them handy! During the holidays, this basket is filled with holiday-appropriate books, and during non-holiday months, it usually holds our current library books. Well, I'm ashamed to say that it's been about a month since my last trip to the library with the kids. Abby brings home two "baggie books" each night, as well as a new book each day from her school media center ... which keeps us on our toes. Also, we just haven't made it to our Thursday morning story time recently, which is where we usually get books. Since our next set of holiday books doesn't come down from the attic until Easter ... I started having the kids collect books from their rooms (themed of course!) to fill the basket periodically. First we did winter books (and books about reading, because our winter collection was somewhat lacking!) ... i.e. penguins, snow, etc. And, I'm happy to report, the kids loved it. The selection included some board books that Tyler could "read" by himself, lots of picture books that Abby could read alone or to Tyler, and some harder books that we read together. This week, the theme is dogs. Wow! I had no idea we had so many dog books (with Clifford books alone, we could have filled the basket) ... and again it's a nice mix of levels. I think we'll continue this for a couple reasons: 1.) it allows us to unearth some of the books the kids have forgotten in their bookshelves and 2.) when they help choose the titles, it keeps them interested in the selection of books out in the living room.

Some of the upcoming themes the kids and I brainstormed:
- love and friendship
- Dr. Seuss
- cats
- trains
- counting
- insects (and maybe even a whole week on butterflies)
- bears
- alphabet
- farm

Snug as a bug ...

... with our new rug!
Thanks Grammy and Grandan for getting it for us as an anniversary present! It really helps pull the living room together. My next project ... painting the coffee table black. There's just too many colors going on in there. And, we're going to do some picture wall switchroos. Stay tuned.

Reunited ...

I'm sure you're all wondering, so I thought I'd take a picture of Tyler and his buddy (and their other friend, "Tiger" the lion). Green Monkey was allowed to come down from the refrigerator this morning. I'm happy to report his owner has agreed to be a better listener (and keeper of his word!) so Sunday mornings should be smooth sailing from now on. I'll let you know next weekend!

Poor Green Monkey

"Green Monkey" (a very original name, I know!) is one of Tyler's favorite stuffed animals (he was a present from Grammy & Grandan the day Ty was born) ... but he's hanging out on top of the refrigerator for the next day or so. A cruel punishment for a pretty minor "crime" (which I'll explain), but I think this is a lesson Tyler will remember. Abby has had several books put up on top of the refrigerator (when she needs a behavior wakeup call!), and if the kids are fighting over something ... it goes up there too (out of sight, out of mind!) But, Green Monkey got his sentence yesterday after Tyler sabotaged our morning at Sunday School. Most parental decisions don't give me guilt, but this one is. Especially because Tyler asked this morning if Green Monkey could come down. Then, he told Abby, "Mommy says I still can't have Green Monkey back!" Oy! Read on, then vote for what YOU think I should have done/and should do now on our blog homepage. Hey ... they say raising a child takes a village, right!?

The story: Dennis stayed home to complete a LONG morning of yard work, so I took both children to church. Abby actually goes to church, but Tyler visits the "nursery," where he can play and just be his loud, wiggly three-year old self! Then after church, we pick him up and escort both of them to their Sunday School classrooms upstairs. I realize Tyler probably thought he "did his time" yesterday morning, and didn't want me to be dropping him off again, but we discussed the plan in the car and I reminded him that we didn't need tears this morning (he has resisted - a.k.a. thrown a huge fit - Sunday School a couple times previously) because Mommy was "flying solo!" Also, I was teaching a Baptism lesson, to 3rd graders this week, in a Sunday School class on the other side of the building. But, he threw a fit alright, and I ended up having to take a moody three-year old to the class I was teaching. Not only that, he kept interrupting the lesson, almost fell out of his chair (three times!), and I had to help him complete the experiment we were doing (a messy one at that) while teaching the kids. And, did I mention I lost my voice and have a cold!? Then, I had to cart Tyler with me back and forth to the bathroom down the hall as I cleaned up my mess, straightened the room, etc. in an effort to get BACK across the building to get Abby by the time her class was done. So, I thought a punishment was in order ... mainly because he broke his word to me ... and generally drove me crazy (not a long trip!) Did I overreact? Would you have given Green Monkey a timeout? Talk amongst yourselves. Well, actually - please share your thoughts by taking my poll (see the right hand side of this blog)!

Science Experiment Saturday

Never would I have guessed that our family would be so into science. It wasn't one of my favorite subjects in school ... but I just LOVE doing experiments with the kids (although I wish I could do one to learn why on earth kids whine SO much!) Dennis was in charge of this latest project, which Abby discovered in the science book Kevin and Kym got her for Christmas (great gift by the way ... we highly recommend it), and she badgered us all weekend to try it out! So, with no further ado ... here is how you make Soap-Powered Fish: Cut a fish out of cardboard, and decorate it all "fishy-like!" This was actually the final version of Tyler's fish. At first, he wouldn't let us help cut his out, so his was a rectangle. But, when he learned a more streamlined shape might help with the experiment, he gave in. Prepare a baking dish of water, then apply a bit of dishwashing liquid to the inner "v" of the fish's tail.
Place the fish in the water at one end of the dish ... and watch the fish "swim." Very cool! This works because (and I'm taking this directly from the book), "the skin on the surface of the water is held together by a force called surface tension." When the soap on the fish's tail touches the water, it forms a soapy film behind the fish that pushes the skin on the water away" ... propelling it forward in the water. More experiments to come, I'm SURE! We were informed that even kindergartners are encouraged to participate in the Roberts Elementary Science Fair (coming up this spring). So, we might need to do a lot of experimenting to find the perfect project. You blog readers can be our guinea pigs!

BaNana Bibs

I've never used our blog for this purpose, but I've recently had a couple requests for photos of the baby/toddler bibs Nanny and I make. And I don't have another website on which to display them. If you are one of the people I invited to visit this site to check out these patterns (I currently have nine fabrics in stock), please excuse all the crazy stories and family photos. Believe me ... it's much more than you'd ever want to know about me and my crew! FYI ... the bibs are backed in chenille and sport a snap closure. They are machine washable and are a nice size for babies ... and even toddlers. My son, who is over three now, still uses one now and then, and they are ample enough to catch his messes! Email me at the address on our blog homepage if you're interested in purchasing some. They are $8 each. And, here's a link to a couple shots that show the bibs "in action," on one of our favorite BaNana Bibs' wearers, Sarah Kate Smith. A note to my regular blog readers ... towards the bottom of this post, find a bit of history on BaNana Bibs and how I ended up "in the biz!"

In case you're interested, here's a bit of background on BaNana Bibs. When Tyler was a baby, I started purchasing some really cute (very functional) bibs online, and Nanny (my very talented grandmother) decided she could make more for Tyler in a few other fabrics. Well, Nanny got SO good at sewing them, and she and Mom (Grammy) became very enthused about shopping for cute fabrics, that I ended up with WAY more bibs than I could use personally. So, I began giving them as gifts ... and that led to requests from friends for more bibs ... and my participation in a few craft shows ... and here we are! I do like to keep my bib supply stocked with a variety of boy/girl patterns. I just hesitate to wander into the fabric section at Jo-Ann's anymore. If I find a cute fabric, it's likely I'll end up with another dozen bibs in my "collection!"

My 350th Post!

Yes, you read that right! Since December 2007, I have posted 350 entries on this blog (some more interesting than others, I know!) Now, I'm aware we only have a few regular readers ... but this blog was designed for family and close friends, not the public, right? I'm just happy you all seem to enjoy staying updated on the goings on of "The Florida Schnittkers." What's coming up soon? Photos from Abby's new digital camera! I bet you just can't wait to see what she's been taking pictures of around our house. Believe me, I'll have to do a bit of editing first! Anyway, grandparents, great-grandparents, godparents, aunts and uncles, etc: thanks for helping me celebrate a "blogiversary" of sorts ... on the 9th anniversary of the day I married my wonderful husband no less! Happy Anniversary Dennis ... I love you and the wonderful family we've created together!

Our Petite Players Princess

She may often "wish" she was royalty, but yesterday afternoon Abby WAS a princess ... or she played one for about an hour at her Winter Petite Players show. Since September, this group of kindergarten and 1st-grade girls has had a blast learning all of the songs, lines and moves for their Petite Players production, "Aladdin and the Jewel Princesses." And yesterday, family members were invited to see the show! It's easy to see why Abby has such fun with "Miss Ley Ann" (and her two helpers, who played the palace guards in this show) each week ... here are some pictures. Abby is in the front ... 3rd from the left. Here, she's second from the right. Here's the group on the magic carpet ride...And, I think one of Abby's favorite parts of the program: the curtain call and bow!
We surprised her with flowers ... And Tyler had to check out her bejeweled crown. Then it was time for pictures with her best buddies, Alex (pictured here with a teacher, Miss Courtney) ... And Anabelle. We all can't wait for the spring show in May!

How cool was yesterday!?!

I meant to blog about this last night, but frankly I was STILL glued to the TV, enjoying all of the post-inauguaration coverage. Our TV got quite a workout yesterday (it was on pretty much nonstop, and that's big in our house!) as we took in the pomp and circumstance of Obama's swearing in ceremony and festivities. What a great learning experience for Abby and Tyler too. Abby's class watched it all on TV at school and they talked about this particular presidency and why it will go down in history. Thought you might enjoy this photo of the first inauguaration that was held at the Capitol.
What a difference from the GRAND event that we witnessed yesterday. While I think it would have been a great thing to see in person, I was quite happy watching from the comfort of our living room, with my two sick guys (who are feeling MUCH better I might add. Tyler is still home recuperating, but Dennis is back at work!)

Oh ... this bug is killing us!

Don't come near the Schnittker house! There's still sickness here. After a weekend of quarantine, we sent Abby out into the world today (she hasn't gotten sick at all ... knock on wood!), and I'm about to go volunteer at her school this morning (I got the bug on Sunday evening, but got over it sometime mid-yesterday ... much more short lived than Tyler's bout). Speaking of which, Little Man is still not himself, but I think he's coming around. He stayed home today to mend a bit more ... and he's keeping the big guy (Dennis) company. Poor Dennis had quite a second half of the day yesterday, and he's still not 100 percent. This photo was taken last night, but it could just have easily have been this morning ... as they are still in that same spot in the bed. Sorry to those of you I didn't call back this weekend, or those of you I was supposed to call re: playdates, etc. I think we're starting to get back on track now!

TLC for Mr. T

Poor little Tyler is still sick! He is feeling better now, but hasn't been himself since Friday night. We haven't needed to break out the first aid kit, just a lot of TLC. And, unfortunately, much of that TLC has been needed overnight and in the wee hours of the morning. Today, the stomach issues seem to have subsided (last bout was early this morning), but we have a tired little boy on our hands. Currently, he's laying on the couch, bundled up, and snacking on some dry Chex cereal. We would have preferred toast or something, but since this is the first thing he has asked for in a day and a half, we said "SURE!" Just thought we would update you grandparents, who I know are aware of Tyler's tummy trouble. We might check in with you later today, as we will NOT be going out tonight as previously scheduled. Oh well ... Tyler's nap day has kept us at home and helped us get some around-the-house projects checked off the list.

Abby's Special Days

Abby got to use the "You are special today" plate last night ... one day late. On Wednesday, she received a perfect report card from her 2nd nine weeks of kindergarten. By getting all "Es" and "3s" Abby made the "E Honor Roll." Way to go Abs ... we're proud of you. And this morning, Tyler and I accompanied Abby to school and hung out in Mrs. Shaw's classroom with Abby's classmates to watch her on the Roberts Elementary School "news." (Tyler is the little one in the orange snow cap ... it has been cold here!)Abby and her friend, Finn, were the flag holders (see how they dressed in red, white and blue!). At risk of distracting them, I took these shots in Abby's classroom. At first it looks like Abby is trying to grab the flag from Finn... But really they are just trying to get it in place. Unfortunately it ended up covering Abby's face for the first part of the Pledge. But, eventually they figured it out. I ran down and took a shot of them in the "WRES studio" afterwards anyway. This time, we removed Abby's jacket (!) and positioned the flag so you could see both of their smiling faces!

Poor Dennis!

The temp in Pittsburgh this morning!

BRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I'm glad Dennis packed some heavy winter clothes for his trip to Pennsylvania. The kids enjoyed seeing these shots of him in the snow, but I know it can't be as fun in person. This is from his hotel window ... looks chilly. Now, while I know the temps here wouldn't compare to Pittsburgh, it IS pretty cold here in Tallahassee this week. We are supposed to get down in the high teens tonight. I plan to bundle the kids up well for this last day of school before the long weekend! Looking forward to having you back in town Dennis!

Quotes of the Day

This will be my last post today ... I promise! But, I'm on a roll and I wanted to get this note off my desk. Since the new year began, Dennis and I have been keeping a list of funny things we've heard the kids say. This was actually Dennis' idea ... and he's done a super job of writing them down on bits of scrap paper in the kitchen. But I really don't know what he plans to do with them at that point ... write a book? Chances are, I'd eventually "clean them up" (a.k.a. stash them in a basket) so my house looked tidy for guests. So ... here are a few of the best:

"Don't get squirrel on my bat!" (1/1/09)
- Abby to me as I was headed into the playroom to bang on the wall with her baseball bat (We have a squirrel who has learned how to get through a hole in our roof and in the eves of our house to scratch around, hide acorns, whatever. Dennis is looking into it!)

"When I grow up, I'm going to be a champion!" (1/2/09)
- Tyler, sounding very thoughtful while watching football with Dennis

"I look like I've been mugged!" (1/4/09)
- Dennis after the Epiphany Pageant at church.
Tyler was very antsy during all parts but the program itself, and he only wanted Dennis to hold him (a.k.a climb on) that night. Dennis really did look disheveled at the end of the evening!

"I don't like it. I mean, I'm okay with it; I'm just not a big fan of it." (1/7/09)
- Abby, sharing an opinion with her dad, in a manner sounding very similar to ... well, me!

"Did you see Chief Osceola?" (1/9/09)
- Tyler, when Dennis said he had a fabulous day at the office. Dennis followed it up by saying he hadn't run into the FSU mascot at work that day. I guess Tyler thinks Chief Osceola, Renegade, Bobby Bowden, etc. all drink from the same water cooler!

I know I have spent awhile on this blog today, but the kids have been playing so well this afternoon. I had pictures posted in draft form from the beginning of the week, and while they entertained themselves, I was able to finish/publish the posts. I will actually have to post ONE more thing tonight. Dennis is in Pittsburgh this week for work, and from his cell phone, he has forwarded pictures of himself in the snow. Look for those a bit later. I have to make dinner!

Too KOOL for School!

I did something new this past weekend ... I taught Sunday School! In 2008, our family made a personal committment to get to church on a more regular basis, especially since Abby and Tyler had gotten involved in a Sunday School class. Well, if they're staying for that extra hour, then so are their chauffers, right? So, I began shepharding a Sunday School group in the fall ... and when I heard they didn't have a volunteer to lead a group for a four-week workshop, I stepped in apprehensively. I'm happy to announce that it was painless ... and pretty fun.
I'm doing a cooking lesson that explains the importance and symbolism of Baptism. And guess what ... it uses Kool-Aid!
The 4th and 5th graders seemed to get the point on Sunday, and we'll see how the other ages do in the coming weeks! I've made a mental note though ... you kind of lose your credibility and the kids don't think you're at all cool, when you share that you just tried Kool-Aid for the first time this summer because your "mom always thought it was too sugary!" Even though I was trying to be punny ... I guess the title of this post should really be: "Mandy ... not KOOL enough for Sunday School!"

Winter Wonderland

On Monday, I was in charge of coordinating a luncheon for the teachers at Advent. And, I admit, I got a bit carried away with my winter wonderland theme! I'm told it's not normal to gather nature from outside the school and spray it white for centerpieces, and to give your children art projects that last a good part of the weekend. But, they had fun ... and don't these snowflakes look cute!? They really spruced up the buffet table, and used up a fair amount of our overflowing box of packing peanuts!Food for the luncheon was a baked potato bar (Did you know it takes about an hour for potatoes to cook in the oven? I didn't ... but now I do!), a couple varieties of chili, salads, and some vegetable "cupcakes" I tried for the first time. They were actually VERY good. But Dennis almost had me convinced I shouldn't take them to the luncheon. Guess you don't ask someone, who isn't a veggie fan, what they think of a recipe containing about every kind of vegetable imaginable! Anyway, they were a hit ... so here's the recipe. Make sure to use your food processor ... lots of chopping! And I made a double recipe IN cupcake papers ... filling them pretty full. I think I ended up with about 30 total.

VEGETABLE CUPCAKES
¾ stick butter
½ c. ea. chopped green pepper & celery
1 c. ea. chopped onion, zucchini, and broccoli
½ pkg chopped frozen spinach, thawed and drained
1 ½ c. grated carrots
3 eggs
salt and pepper to taste
¾ c. matzo meal
½ c. Parmesan cheese
2 tsp. sweet basil

Melt butter in large skillet. Sauté green pepper, onion, celery, spinach, carrots, zucchini and broccoli. In a large bowl pour all vegetables and allow them to cool. Add eggs, Parmesan cheese, basil, salt, pepper and matzo meal. Mix well. Spoon into greased muffin tins and bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Sprinkle muffins with paprika and serve hot. Yield: approx. 20 cupcakes.
