This morning, on the way back from SouthWood, the turkey breast (that Dennis and I are in charge of cooking ... uh oh!) stole my seat in the car. What a turkey (the driver AND the one in the passenger's seat)! Thursday, November 27, 2008
Decking the Table for Turkey Day
I LOVE setting the dining room table. In fact, it's a wonder we don't eat in there more, because there something about using your china and eating by candlelight that just makes my day! Now that the kids are getting a bit older, maybe we will have a regular meal in there so we can enjoy all of the fun things we got for our wedding and have rarely used. Back to the table. When I'm given free rein, I can get quite carried away with the placesettings for a formal meal. So, I recruited two little helpers to assist me, and possibly reel me back in. No luck! We thought having "nature" would be a nice touch for Thanksgiving, so the kids gathered pinecones and "beautiful fall leaves" from the yard yesterday to use for the centerpieces/placecards.
Then, we made an authentic Native American table runner (Again, with paper left over from Abby's class vests! First a Thankful Tree and now this... what will be next?), decorated with "Indian drawings" like the ones they learned about in school.
Tyler was SO eager to help, and Abby was actually very good about giving him space on the runner as well, even though he copied everything she made. It's a compliment, right? The kids added some of there own touches as well: marbles around the votives and seat assignments. I think the end result turned out great ...

Just hope the meal tastes as good. Pretty sure it will, since we took a shortcut and ordered most of it from Fresh Market!

Four Generations
Today, the four generations of girls on my side of the family: Abby, me, Grammy and Nanny, enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast (the last of the pre-Thanksgiving ones, thank goodness!) in Abby's kindergarten classroom.
Abby was VERY excited to have Grammy and Nanny there ... and I guess she was happy I was there as well! But, I was actually at the school already this morning, doing my regular volunteering stint in the classroom. It was nice to end the morning, hanging out at Abby's table with my gals though!
And, although it was only 10:30 (you know we call it brunch!), none of us had a problem eating a full plate of food. Abby has actually become a lover of mashed potatoes. What do you know, I may not have to make an alternate dinner for the kids for Thanksgiving this year! Yippee!
Mixin' It Up ...
Yesterday, Abby and Tyler helped me mix up a batch of "Blessing Snack Mix" to distribute to their friends at school today. Sort of a Happy Thanksgiving treat!
However, it only made enough for Abby's classmates (17) and one bag for Tyler's teacher. Sorry Ty! The idea is really cute though. Click on the photo to enlarge it and read the ingredients and their meanings.
I found the idea online last year, then rediscovered it in my idea folder last week. We made up these cute cards and Abby signed each one, then wrote her friends' names on the other side.
Abby was so cute passing them out at today's Thanksgiving feast. But don't even ask about the meltdown she had when she realized there wasn't a bag for her to take home! Five year olds ... sheesh!
Woohoo ... the week is off to a good start!
Any of you who talk to me on a regular basis know, I've become a bit of a workout junkie. I actually really do like working out (or maybe I feel like I can cross something off my list if I've completed that task daily ... the guilty Catholic in me). Well even though I am pretty diligent about getting to classes/the gym other days of the week, lately I've been having a really tough time making it to my Monday night workout class ... a favorite, Bootcamp Spinning. It starts at 5:45 p.m. and re
quires a bit of set up (finding and adjusting your bike, setting out a set of weights, bands, mat, etc.) before the class, so I have to get there 5 or 10 minutes early. This is hard to do because it's dinnertime, and Dennis needs to rush home to relieve me ... right in the middle of the kids' witching hour(s). Also, it's SO hard to get yourself motivated on a Monday night to leave the house again ... and so, I've skipped Spin for many weeks in a row. I'm happy to say, last night I was able to go (thanks in large part to Mom and Nanny ... who arrived in town last night and "bridged the gap" until Dennis got home) and I feel like I've started the week off on the right foot! It's pretty much a given that I'll eat too much this week on Turkey Day, so getting a head start feels good! Hey! Maybe this will be the first holiday when I DON'T gain weight ... wouldn't that be a miracle?! We'll see if I can resist all of the good things I have in the hopper to make this week. On tap next: a Honey Harvest Cake and Dough Nuts (cute little donut bits topped with toffee). Oh Lordy ... this could be hard!

FEAST your eyes...
... on these pictures from Tyler's Thanksgiving Feast at preschool this morning. As Tyler put it, "I ate turkey and ham AND a carrot ... but I choked ON my napkin." When prompted, it appears he did not like the cheese and spit it out IN his napkin! Glad I was not at the feast during that show of manners, but unfortunately a couple of my friends were! Oh well ... it's the age, right?
There are fourteen kids in Tyler's class, so they were spread out at two tables. And, while other classes get all "Pilgrimed up" for the festivities, Ms. Cindy thinks the 2- and 3-year olds prefer to wear just a necklace. Tyler has a hard enough time eating in general, so this was a good call.
And, how cute are the placemats they made with their hands? I swear ... there are three dozen child-size handprints (and some cat ones too!) on my back sliding door and front storm door here ... which irks me beyond belief, but I just LOVE crafts that use their handprints! I know someday I'll miss the messy doors and long for small handprints that make the house looked lived in!
Smarshmallows!
That's what Tyler calls them ... Smarshmallows! Although Dennis and I enjoyed the first fire of the season on Saturday night during that awesome FSU game ... (shh don't tell!), we had the first fire with kids last night. They have to understand that there won't always be marshmallows when we have a fire, but we let them do it last night. Love the residual spaghetti sauce on Tyler's face. Saving it to go with the "smarshmallows," I guess!
Bathtime Broohaha!
I could have looked "broohaha" up ... but this is how it sounds in my head. Anyway, thought you might like these shots of Abby and Tyler in the bath together yesterday, as we may not be holding joint baths for too much longer!
As you can see, they get pretty wild and crazy in there, and Dennis is asking when it becomes inappropriate for kids of different sexes to bathe together ... any suggestions? I just like it because it's a change of scenery for them, they're contained (!) and they entertain themselves, WHILE getting clean! What could be better than that?
Ho-Ho-Ho ... Merry ALMOST (!) Christmas!
A big help ...
... and close to the ground. So he can see the dust better, right?
I saw this "trick" in Family Fun magazine once, and decided to try it yesterday when Tyler asked to help clean up the house. You just remove two portions of the the Swiffer handle, and let them go to town! Now, can I sign him up for a daily ... or at least bi-weekly dusting gig? These floors show the dust a bit! But I love them, don't get me wrong ...

Roberts' Fall Festival
On Friday afternoon/evening, we braved the cool temperatures and wind to support Abby's elementary school. We had NO idea what to expect, but the Fall Festival was TONS of fun.
Above, Abby is laughing at Tyler ... who wishes he was a Roberts Red Fox (just a couple more years dude!). But the joke's on her, because WHO opts for a snow cone in November!?! Surprisingly, lots of people. Guess it wasn't a bad booth for Abby's class to run after all. And this was like looking for a needle in a haystack ... only better, because they were digging for CANDY!
Abby had a great time on the bouncers/slides ...
And Tyler was all about the mini-train (or "his train" as he called it, because it was the same one that was at the Advent end-of-the-year carnival last May) ...
We even braved the LONG line to have the kids' faces painted. Abby chose a butterfly ...
And Tyler asked for a dinosaur, but ended up with a dragon (he was fine with that). The funniest part was that he SEEMED to be falling asleep while he was having his face painted. He didn't, but he stayed VERY still ...
The finished products!
Abby made a marble paint creation ...
And, we met up with Lucy, who had been transformed into a cute little cat ...
Abby was delighted to have her Daddy join us for the festival ...
And I was glad Dennis agreed to work our family's shift at the snowcone booth!
The festival got TWO THUMBS UP from Abby! We can't wait until next year!
Decked for Turkey Day!
Hair Today ... Gone Tomorrow!
Actually, she had hair on Thursday afternoon, and by that evening, it was 5-6 inches shorter! Abby has been complaining about having her hair combed (it has been SO full of tangles) every morning before school ... and I couldn't stand it anymore! Also, it has just looked long. She has had 2-3 haircuts, but only an inch or two each time. This was a major step for Abby ... and Mommy. Unfortunately, the ringlet curls are few and far between now! Enjoy these before and after pictures. By the way ... Abby LOVES her haircut, and that's what's important!

And the back view:

This was on the same day, but Abby got lots of stuff from school on her dress, and I gave her a bath before her haircut. The front view:

Loonies Who Lunch!
So I could have been "lunching" by myself, or with well-behaved adults, but instead I opted to lunch with Abby, Tyler ... and the rest of the Roberts' kindergarteners today! Next week is Abby's Thanksgiving party/feast in her classroom, but today was the schoolwide turkey lunch in the cafeteria. I thought Tyler would enjoy eating with Abby in her "big kid cafeteria" ... and boy, did he! I will tell you that there wasn't much eating going on though. I debated whether to post this photo or not ... but it's a good example of how it all went down at lunch (if you can call it that ... our designated time was 10:10 AM!). Tyler didn't like the turkey (I love how exasperated Abby looks) ...
But he was all about the "smarshmallows" (that's what he calls them) that topped the sweet potatoes. Incidentally, the sweet potatoes were the only thing Abby didn't like ... she even ate stuffing (!), but they agreed on one thing: Chocolate Milk was the best thing about Thanksgiving lunch. Doubt that was on the menu back in the old times!
Today, half the kids in Abby's class were Pilgrims and half were Indians. Next week, they will switch, so Abby will get to show off her Native American vest then. Wow! Those are some nice vests ... wish I knew who cut them all out?! Oh ... it was me! :) That's how I got the brown paper scraps for our Thankful Tree.
(From left to right are: Finn, Ricky, Christopher, Leighton, and the lone Pilgrim in this picture, our little Abby)
Can't end this post without telling you about my run in with the lunch lady. Not ever having been a big cafeteria-lunch purchaser myself, I've never understood the gripes people have with these women (I realize I'm stereotyping ... but indulge me). Until today! Although we got the info to do so back in August, I've never set up Abby's lunch "debit account." The other two times she purchased lunch, I just sent cash in that morning. Today, I didn't send any money, since I'd be joining her. But, I guess the lunch lady who runs the register doesn't like to do it that way. She was COMPLETELY thrown by the fact that I wanted to pay for Abby's lunch and my own. She told me Abby should have entered her PIN this morning with the class lunch order. I nicely explained to her that there's NO money in that account, and I told her, "Just charge me for two parent meals." More money for me, yes ... but no biggie! However, the lady couldn't get past the fact that Abby was a student, and she wouldn't let me buy two parent meals. Mrs. Shaw was called over, and had to write Abby's name down on a list of kids who would have their accounts deducted later (again ... NO money in that account). So, I had to give Mrs. Shaw Abby's $1.50 to pay the school back later, all since the lady wouldn't ring it up for me. Seriously! But, kind of funny in a Seinfeld way, if you think about it!
Feather Fun!
Tyler's teacher sent some "homework" home with him last Friday ... and I'm embarrassed to say, I JUST helped him complete it. It kind of got buried in a pile on the kitchen counter. I'm sure he's going to fail out of preschool NOW! This morning, Tyler and I got busy and decorated his feather to add to the big turkey in Ms. Cindy's room (but do THEY have a Thankful Tree?) tomorrow.
Tyler stayed home with me today. In just a bit, we're going to Roberts to join Abby in the cafeteria for the school-wide turkey lunch, then we're going to hit storytime at the library. I'll surely take the camera and grab a shot or two of Tyler hanging with the kindergartners at the lunch table!
