- PLAY-DOH was initially a grayish-white color
- The formula for the original PLAY-DOH compound still remains top secret.
- If combined, the total amount of PLAY-DOH Compound manufacture since 1956 would weigh more than 700 million pounds. That’s equal to the weight of 159 fully-loaded Space Shuttles.
- Approximately 95 million cans of PLAY-DOH Compound are manufactured each year.
- If all the PLAY-DOH Compound made since 1956 was extruded through the Fun Factory®, it would make a "snake" that would wrap around the world nearly 300 times.

National Play-Doh Day
Did you know about this "holiday?" Play-Doh, a kid-favorite for sure, has been around since 1955!
I planned a Play-Doh themed craft day last September for a moms club the kids and I were involved in ... so that's how I knew about it. This year, instead of making our own playdough (which was a catastrophe last year when I forgot a major ingredient!), I simply broke our goods out and let the kids play with them after dinner. Let me tell you ... they love playing with the stuff, but I hate the mess Play-Doh makes. If National Play-Doh Day fell later in the week (after the cleaning lady will be here) we would have had to celebrate differently. You should have seen the floor!
Since I have them handy from last year's activity, I thought you might find these facts fun:
Privacy Please!
Warning: this post is rated PT (those of you who were blog readers back in early 2008 know this stands for "potty training," or in this case, potty related).
For being a little kid with virtually no shame (he would run around buck naked in the house if we'd let me), Tyler does like his privacy on the potty. I mean, who doesn't? Anyway, when Abby was Tyler age, and business needed to be "conducted," she used to politely say, "Privacy please." And we would leave her alone and close the door if she desired.
Tyler on the other hand, is adamant about having the bathroom door closed when he needs some time alone, and he yells, "Move the stool," "Close the door," "Privacy!," to anyone who is present. The funny part is that he doesn't care how many people are in the bathroom with him ... he just wants that door closed!
We've had times where it's been me giving Abby a bath in the tub, Dennis in there chatting with us, and Bailey serving his cat duty as ever-present spectator ... and Tyler runs in with an emergency. He demands we close the door ... so we're all in there just hanging out, together! What a family! Thought you'd all find this funny...

All About Abby
It's "All About Abby" week in Mrs. Shaw's kindergarten class this week. Not a change for us ... as Abby makes sure life in the Schnittker house is all about Abby most days!
Since we had to go and name our daughter Abby, she's first in alphabetical order on pretty much any list. That means we got the notification about the "All About Me" program on Friday and Abby's week began this Monday! So I did what any mom would do ... repurposed old share week materials! Advent's share weeks went by birthday, so we had just made an All About Me poster for Abby in May. This went in with her today (just had to glue down some pictures that were trying to make a break for it), as well as an A-B-C photo album we made last year, and framed photos of those not pictured in the album. Easy schmeezy!
Abby was in charge of collecting everything for the share bag, so she took:
Abby was in charge of collecting everything for the share bag, so she took:
- swim googles
- a chapter book
- a gymnastic leotard
- a toy tractor (to tell the class about her Iowa grandparents)
- Shamu and a Sea World map (to tell them about her Orlando grandparents)
- a fairy wand
- Fancy Nancy
- a Littlest Pet Shop pet
Mrs. Shaw said she did a fabulous job giving the class details about each item. The only thing we forgot to share about was Bailey, so she's taking a photo of him tomorrow. I said, if it was up to me, she could take the actual cat (and leave him there), but Abby refused! Oh, cut me some slack! Bailey, who meowed until I left him outside in the backyard last night, pooped all over our back porch. And, when I fall asleep on the couch watching TV (like tonight) he attacks me by biting my arm! Share about that why don't 'ya Abby!

Shhh ... Quiet Time!
Quiet time is a very important thing around here ... for the adults, that is! I used to require Abby to take a break and do a quiet activity during Tyler's nap. But, recently I've started saving some of my quiet ideas for "The Witching Hour." If you have small children, you know what I'm talking about. It begins around 4:30 p.m. and lasts until dinnertime. The kids, who maybe were once reserved and occupied, flip a switch inside themselves and kick it into high gear! Usually this is about the time I pop the cork on a bottle of wine. Coincidence? I think not! Anyway, I recently made a list of quiet activities the kids can break out when I need them to calm down. They enjoy choosing something from the list themselves and don't mind coming to the breakfast room table, or the activity table in the playroom. If they are in the breakfast room, we can all talk, and they don't feel removed from the action in the kitchen (or wherever I am). A couple of our favorites are: puzzles, the dry-erase book, card games, or activities like this Mosaic kit.
Usually Abby gets really into this for about 10 minutes, then loses interest. She started this picture of a dinosaur the other day, and today Tyler and I helped her finish it. Tyler loves finding all of one particular number/color (this is a great learning tool!) ... but he also likes tossing and scattering the little color cubes all over the floor! What can I say - he's a 2-year old boy!
FSU - Game #2
Good thing we had plenty of adults to take turns holding and entertaining children, although Tyler seemed to be in a Daddy mood much of the time. Here he is (below) sporting Dennis' sunglasses.
We didn't go all out this week, but we did tailgate before making our way over to the stadium for the pre-game show. Tyler had been gearing up all week to beat the drum (he thought it was too loud at last weekend's season opener) ... so we stopped and gave it a go.
Abby's good friend, Anabelle, joined us for the tailgate and first few minutes of the game. Together, they cheered the Noles on to a victory. If you know me well, you know I'm not a huge football fan ... but I love the traditions. A real favorite - watching a sea of fans do the Tomahawk Chop!
A-B-C Tater Tots
Fairy Magic
Abby was so excited to attend Shelby's 5th birthday party on Friday. She just adores Cookies and Tea for Me (the party boutique where it was held) and loved the chance to dress up like a "Fairytopia" princess. I have NO IDEA if I got that terminology right! While Abby has watched Barbie movies at friends' houses, we've managed to avoid collecting them (or the Barbies themselves) at our house. In addition to dressing like fairies (there was full getup but I missed that part of the party), getting a mini-manicure and face paint, they had a fairy tea, did a fashion show and made a fairy party mix (trail mix). Fun, fun!

What "Wii" Did Last "Wii"kend!
This month's Supper Club was a hit ... literally! After a great dinner (thanks Lori and Wayne), "we" broke out the "Wii" and did a little boxing. For those of you who have never experienced Wii, it's a video game system that allows you play like the characters on screen. There are workout programs that really make you sweat, tennis games that let you serve and volley, and many more! Dennis and I were the first to try boxing. Notice Dennis' game face!
At first we didn't know what we were doing ... I was getting destroyed by Dennis. But I quickly broke out some moves from my kickboxing classes and ended up winning the match. See the screen below ... Dennis didn't know what was coming. He went down for the count! Woohoo!
You can even watch the first minute or so of our boxing match. It doesn't really capture our competitive nature ... or how exhausting playing Wii can be. But you can get a feel for the game in general. NOTE: this is the first time I have posted a video clip on the blog. I don't know how many of you will be able to view it. Just press play on the bar below the frozen video frame below. Enjoy!

Now THAT'S a Pizza!
On Tuesday, we indulged a bit ... but it was for a good cause! Yesterday, a percentage of proceeds from sales at certain local restaurants were donated to Communities in Schools (a group that helps local schoolchildren). No meal planning? Sure, sign me up for a night out! Actually, our schedule was a bit tight, so we brought dinner home (AND HOW!) I figured I'd spend what we would have paid if we had gone to the pizza place to eat ... so I ordered the biggest pizza, hoping Dennis would come home hungry, and knowing I would end up with lots of leftovers that I'd freeze for lunches.
Well, I guess I had forgotten that the XL pizza at Momo's really is EXTRA LARGE. Dennis (who doesn't travel the birthday party circuit, like myself) had never seen one of these monsters, and he was our pickup/delivery man. He came in from the garage with the pizza, singing something that sounded like the Olympic overture, or the 2001 theme. Then, we had to take a few funny pictures before we dug in!
I believe we could have fed a small army with this pizza. Anyone for leftovers? Tyler doesn't even like pizza much. Needless to say, we have a whole freezer full!
So Long Sippy Cups!

100 Years ... wow!
Mandy Goes to Kindergarten!
Well, today I began my weekly volunteer morning at Roberts Elementary School. I help Abby's teacher, Mrs. Shaw, with whatever needs done that day. Today, it was making letter/word rings for the kids to take home, helping with an art project, and overseeing the students as they wrote their numbers (1-20) in Mrs. Shaw's evaluation book. Since I wrapped up my volunteer time right before lunch (well since it's at 10:25 I call it "brunch"), I joined Abby in the cafeteria. Now, THAT was fun! Or I should say funny! I hereby challenge any of you dear blog readers to join a group of kindergarteners at lunch for 30 minutes ... and feel put together. These kids are adorable, and they ask all sorts of questions, most of which begin with, "Abby's Mommy ... have you (fill in the blank)?" At one point, a classmate of Abby's began taking polls. He wanted us to raise our hands if we 1.) saw Camp Rock, 2.) had a birthday coming up, 3.) were done with our lunches and MY FAVORITE 4.) were OLD. Well, let me tell you, I was the only one sitting there that was over six! So it was slightly offending ... but very entertaining. Can't wait for next week!

F-L-O-R-I-D-A S-T-A-T-E ... woo!
Cheers all ... and welcome to football season! As Aaron would say, FSU's first 2008 "GAAAAAMMMMEEEDDDDDAYYYYYY" started off just great. We were excited for the game, and even though Mom and I vowed NOT to get carried away with tailgating plans, we couldn't help ourselves! Among other things, she made muffulettas (yum!) and I contributed some GARNET and GOLD jello shots!
A friend of mine, Jen Fennell, used to make these years ago for their tailgates (she probably still does) but I had never tried it. They went over great ... even with my mom!
Martha ... thought you'd be curious ... those were NOT a recipe from the Jello cookbook you gave me this summer, but I did grab some tips from the Jello Jiggler page when I made these non-alcoholic football shaped jigglers for the kids.
We had my parents's FSU tent/canopy up ... but even that couldn't cool us off. Halfway through the tailgate, we remembered what was said last year. Tailgates in September are WAY too hot! Tyler had his shirt off for part of the pre-game festivities (trying to cool off), but it's back on and he's all smiles here with Grandan.
When we made our way into the stadium, Abby stopped for a quick turn on the BIG drum ...
But Tyler wasn't as sure about the loudness! He's so funny about things like that. He plugs his ears at Chick fil A in the kids area, and when I grind the coffee, etc.
Here's a picture we all took with Chief Osceola ... and a close-up shot of the "Go Team" pennant Abby stamped to prepare for the game. She got this idea from the stamp box that sits on her activity table. On Friday afternoon, I found her in there "creating" ... and was shocked to see that she put this together (tape and all) by herself.
Unfortunately, right after the team left the field following their warmup, they announced an hour-long rain delay. We tried to wait it out with the masses (see the picture of Tyler and Dennis) in the concourse, but after the second batch of showers came, Mom and I took the kids and headed (through pouring rain) to the car.
Dennis and Dad saw one touchdown, then left (for a sports bar) when the game was delayed again due to lightning. The Seminoles ended up doing great when the game resumed ... guess we'll get to see their moves at next week's game!
Creepy!
Halloween has come a bit early to Tallahassee! Isn't this the weirdest thing you've ever seen!? Dennis was out doing yardwork on Saturday morning and he found this very cool-looking spider web in the driveway. Some spider either spent a long time on this one, or didn't quite get to finish! Now, Dennis and the kids think this design looks like "Mickey ears" ... I don't buy it!

Chain, Chain, Chain ...
We're big into counting down to things here in the Schnittker house. Actually, this has always been a big thing for me. My brother, Aaron, and I agree it's good to have something to look forward to. So ... on Monday, we began counting down to Tyler's 3rd birthday (which is on September 30th). We have that chain draped over the top of our breakfast room window treatment, and each night he gets to cut off one link. This has actually been really good for Tyler, as he is saying, "I get to cut down the #3 today" etc. The other day at dinner, he was looking at the chain and he commented, "I don't think I can wait that long!"
Having gotten a bit lazy with my working out toward the end of the summer, I've put myself on a weight loss program. So, I too have a chain ... this one charts my progress. Notice I haven't included a photo of my chain. No way will you blog readers get to see how many links (which represent pounds) I need to cut off. I'll just let you know when I reach my goal!
Not to be left out, Abby has a short count-down chain. This week, she has been keeping track of the days left until the FSU football season begins. Our first "GAMEDAY" of the season is this Saturday!
Homework!

Labor Day Fun
Oh, and she took a picture of the three of us ... which never seems to happen, as I'm always behind the camera!
