With LOVE, Mommy!

We had a great Valentines Day ... lots of family time, and lots of food crafts! Hey ... it's how I show my love! For breakfast, I made heart-shaped pancakes, which were a hit despite the less-than-yummy (in my opinion) pancake mix I used. Recently, while at Sam's Club, I happened upon a three-pack of mix that dispenses like Reddi-Whip. Not good. I don't recommend it. But, the kids liked the pancakes anyway. When it comes to breakfast food, they aren't too picky.Throughout the day, we snacked on heart-shaped Jello Jigglers. And, yes ... they were "the kind without alcohol" ... can't believe my daughter asked me that. But, if you consider what I did with Jello for Christmas and football season, then it was kind of warranted! I made them heart-shaped (right down to the pepperoni) ... although they would have eaten pizza no matter the shape. And, to get some of the good stuff in them (can you count Dino nuggets as good stuff?) I made some other favorites. I must admit, I have cookie cutter and food coloring issues. The cucumbers looked oh-so-cute as hearts, and the ranch dressing was much more exciting to the kids when it was Valentines Day pink!
We had dinner in front of the TV, watching Madagascar (a Valentines gift from us to the kids). Let me tell you ... you haven't lived until you've seen Abby and Tyler groove to "I want to move it, move it..." So funny. We all danced to the credit sequence, and after that, I needed a nap! The kids (who had a very full day) slept well too!

Soccer Season Closer

Auntie Jenn made a guest appearance at Abby's last two games of the season (Saturday), which was good for Tyler too. She wrapped him up like a burrito and kept him warm while we watched the games (it was a dreary day out ... but I didn't think it would be as chilly as it was!)The games went pretty much like the rest of the season ... no big wins ... but there WERE lots of little victories. The Foxes got one goal in each of games (!), there were no injuries, everyone played hard, and no goals were scored on Abby during her stint as goalie (last quarter of the second game). Thank goodness. The girl is so sensitive! And ... dramatic! She had a lot of help from her teammates when she was in goal. And when the ball was down at the other end of the field, she discovered a fun little game to play! At first she was just being funny for the folks on the sidelines, but when she saw me whip out the camera, she really got into the game (no ... not the soccer one, a game of Peek-a-boo!) As always, Coach Dennis did great with his "waterboy" duties. The kids just love him, as evidenced when they ganged up on him in the Red Elephant lobby at the post-season pizza party!I love this photo of Dennis and our kids, as well as Michael (one of the real hams on the team). And who knows what was happening in the second shot below (of Abby and Tyler). Maybe they were showing their Valentine love!
Great first season of soccer Abby!

Valentine's Day Eve

Since Valentine's Day fell on a Friday (ooohh! Friday the 13th!), we got to celebrate this fun holiday for two straight days. Today, it was all about the school parties!

This morning, Abby was excited to have the whole family come to her kindergarten class (yes, I was there too - I'm just always the photographer) for a Family Valentines Breakfast. However, I have to say, getting everyone ready, ironing clothes (I know Mom, I should have had that done!), making lunches ... along with 50-60 slices of bacon (our contribution for the breakfast), and leaving the house with the whole family for the day at 7:15 a.m. is NOT my cup of tea. Speaking of which, I didn't have time to make a cup of tea ... or coffee to take with me, so I've been tired all day long! But, it was great to spend time with Abby. I love this picture of her with Dennis ... but especially because of Tyler's expression. It's as if he's saying, "Oh, I see how it is!" Lovin' that milk mustache, Abby! Then at Advent, Tyler had a fun little party ... and he made Strawberry Shortcakes in Cooking. Ms. Cindy and Ms. Vicky had quite a job passing out all the goodies the kids brought in. So ... do you think Ty ate much for lunch today? NO! He and a good friend, Campbell, did more hugging than eating. Aren't they precious though? The crown (which Ty wore ALL day), says "King Tyler," even though he told me he was a prince.

TY: Ms. Cindy said I could wear a crown ... because I'm Prince Charming!
ME: Did you remind her that your name was Tyler, not Charming?
TY: (pause ... computing) Well, my name is Tyler, but she called me charming. (pause) And she said all of the girls were my princesses!

When we got home, Tyler got to check out all of his loot!My favorite thing was a little airplane one of the moms made (because the kids really don't have much to do with the whole process at this age, right? That said, Tyler DID write a "T" on his valentines). So easy ... and I love the message!
Oh, Abby made out like a bandit too. And, in addition to the valentines, Abby received her last Baggie Book reading award. We started with the beginning of the alphabet in September, and Abby made it all the way through Level I, which is the last one. Now, they're going to get her set up with and Accelerated Reader (AR) program account, so she can read books and take quizzes on the computer at school. Fun!

Valentines Candy

Yesterday, the kids and I had a fun time making candy for Valentine's Day. We used pretzels ... Not THESE particular pretzels, mind you. Abby was just being silly. Anyway, we dipped the pretzels in red melted candy (thanks Alex for demonstrating the technique), coating both sides.
Then we sprinkled them with sugar sprinkles. Tyler's friend, Hayden, preferred the "full coverage" method. Finally, we let the pretzels harden, and they *somewhat* resembled hearts! Oh well, it was fun ... and that's what's important. Tyler, who is not pictured, but definitely participated in the project (mostly taste testing!) took the finished products with him to school today to share during their Valentine's party.

Be a Theta, Kappa Alpha Theta ...

"Oh, I'm a Theta, she's a Theta, together we will all be Thetas ... wouldn't you like to be a Theta too? Be a Theta, Kappa Alpha Theta!"

Those are a few of the words from one of the songs that has stuck with me from my sorority days in Kappa Alpha Theta. But, did we sing it at the Theta alumnae event I attended last night? NO! Instead, we sang my sorority's version of grace, which I could not remember a word of, let alone the tune! I kind of mumbled along ... thinking I would get to roll out my Theta handshake at some point and prove I remember something (haven't done that in more than a decade!), but all I got were regular handshakes! That said, it was nice to connect with others from my sorority (some who pledged here at FSU ... and some who live in Tallahassee but went to other colleges) - even though most of them were over 60 (no offense to many of you regular blog readers)! I did meet a couple people who have children at Abby's school and in the same after-school activities. I recognized their faces from around town, so it was nice to actually meet them and discover our other bond: Theta sisterhood. I'm glad I went last night. Maybe I'll actually get involved and somehow support the local chapter. Like I need another hobby though, right!?!

Inquiring mind want to know...

Or, maybe there aren't any inquiring minds out there ... but I'm telling you a few things anyway.

  1. Tyler was talking about his grandparents when he read this book this morning ... guess we'll have to set him straight. Martha (Dennis' mom) just retired from the postal service (congratulations!) I think I mentioned this was coming up ... but I've been waiting on pictures of her final day on the job to blog about it (send those photos Martha and Bill). Apparently, it was a fun day ... lots of antics with her co-workers AND she rode in a limo for the last half of her last delivery route! Now she and Bill have to make a trip into the post office like the rest of us to mail a package (got your Valentines one for the kids yesterday M/B, but haven't opened it yet). Bill left the postal service right after the holiday too ... so they are now full-time farmers!

  2. The kids dental appointments went okay (!) the other day. No teeth gone yet (as we thought would be the case), but the dentist told me I could pull Abby's two front teeth out myself no problem. Uh, no thank you! That kind of icks me out. I think I'll wait until she loosens them a bit more. Apparently, overcrowding is going to be a problem in both of our kids' mouths! Fun, fun ... braces here we come!

  3. YES, we do have "Love and Friendship" themed books in our container of books by the couch. They kids loved helping me gather appropriate titles, and they've been reading up a storm! Thank you Judy for the books you're planning to send for an upcoming theme. I love Shel Silverstein books!

  4. We are on DAY 6 of wearing red and/or pink. Well, at least Abby is. Last year, both of us did it for a week (and she might have gone all red for two weeks leading up to Valentines Day) ... but I haven't been keeping up with the laundry really well, so we're wearing what's available!

  5. My basket committee has been SO helpful! Because we're trying to keep the values manageable for bidders, we broke several themes into 2 or 3 baskets ... which means I've prepared 30 this year! YIKES! This morning, I'm bribing my committee members with heart-shaped donuts, in hopes of wrapping everything up. Wouldn't Dennis be excited if I didn't have to bring any of the baskets home this year!?

Okay ... consider yourself updated! Tune in later today for pictures from another fun Valentines food craft. Now, I am planning to do this with two little friends (that's two friends of my little friends ... so four children total) in tow. I may not have time to take out the camera!

Cross your Ts...

Yes, he did. Tyler crossed his "Ts" on about 20 valentines yesterday. Now, I know he could do the "Y" as well (and the other letters for that matter), but he was off to other projects. I figure, one letter is good, and I'll fill in the rest. But he was a machine when it came to doing the "Ts." We are so proud of our big boy!
