'Twas the night before Kindergarten...
Yes ... you could say we got a bit carried away making sure Abby was all ready for kindergarten. As Dennis pointed out, it was slightly reminicent of a certain holiday in December. First, there were the "kindergarten-eve presents" Abby received at the pool from the Smiths and Auntie Jenn. Then before bed, we read "The Night Before Kindergarten" ...
After that, we sprinkled the "Jitter Glitter" Abby's teacher gave her outside the front door. Similar to the reindeer food we scatter on Christmas Eve, no? By the way, Jitter Glitter is to get rid of the jitters and help you sleep well the night before school starts.
And before they went to sleep, Abby and Tyler left their bookbags open hoping for a gift from the "Backpack Fairy!" I stole this idea from Family Fun magazine ... thought the kids would like it. And they did ... the Backpack Fairy did not disappoint. She left Abby a new dress to wear to school sometime this fall, and Tyler received a new book and a couple plastic bugs. I fessed up and told Abby the Backpack Fairy was me ... wish I hadn't, but I think she was with me when I purchased that dress. Darn! If I had talked it up a bit more, she might have left some cookies out on the mantle!

Kicking Off Kindergarten
Today we met Lorie and Emily Smith, Auntie Jenn, and Julie and Makenna Howell at the pool to wrap up the summer ... and help Abby and Emily "kick off" kindergarten! (the tablecloth is supposed to be a football field ... but my paint pen didn't like the plastic tablecover)
How nice it was of Lorie and Jenn to bring the girls (and Tyler too!) some little gifts to get them excited about school ... not that this is a problem. Tomorrow I'll add information and pictures of Abby's kindergarten-eve preparations! Oh my goodness ... these girls are so big. If my scanner was working (we weren't digital then!), I'd post a photo of Abby and Emily from almost exactly five years ago. You'd never believe how they've grown!
With her OWN money!
Abby was so proud of herself yesterday. We took the kids to the Scholastic Warehouse Sale, where we always love to stock up on books for future reading, gifts, etc. I didn't want the kids to think they were going to come home with a stockpile of new books for themselves (they have a TON of books ... trust me!) so I told Abby she could buy one herself with her own money. How guilty did I feel taking quarters out of her piggy bank that she's been "feeding" since she was one year old? But, it was worth it to see her spend just over $2.00 of that money on a Magic Treehouse book that she SO wanted to buy.
I had her count the money out and hand it to the cashier, then take the receipt and change. What a foreign concept ... usually she helps me swipe my American Express!

Just like Abby!
Abby is VERY excited about using the "nap mat" we had to purchase for kindergarten. Mind you, she hasn't taken an afternoon nap for over a year and a half, but she seems to think she will be using that required rest time at school for a quick snooze. When we got home today, I heard her say, "Well, I'm really tired ... I'm going to lie down." I couldn't imagine what she was up to, until I saw the red mat in tow. She thought "napping" while watching a quick video would be effective (right!) so I agreed to turn something on. But, a squabble soon broke out, because Tyler didn't have room to "sleep" on the mat with her. Abby, ever the gracious big sister, made him an oh-so-comfortable mat out of couch throw pillows! What will she h

Thursday was a big day for Abby! She went to her new school for Kindergarten Orientation, where she met her teacher, Mrs. Shaw. Also pictured is class pet, Sydney, an iguana-type thing.
She explored her new classroom (they had a great scavenger hunt prepared to help the kids get to know their surroundings). Abby and I made sure she knew where the bathroom was and how to turn on the lights, faucet, etc. We also walked from the classroom to the library, cafeteria and playground to see how far she would be from all of these important areas. Abby wanted to know what everything said on the walls and she read much of it to me. When we were reading the jobs on the classroom helper board and came across some like "table washer" and "teacher's helper", she said, "Ooooh, these jobs are much more important than preschool!"
All of the kindergartners in Mrs. Shaw's class were asked to write their names when they got there, and since she can, Abby signed her whole name. She is very proud that she recently learned to spell "Schnittker." I think it's because she hears me spell it so often on the phone!
She met several very nice children who will be in her class, including this little boy, Amari, who as you can see is also a fan of the class pet!
After being in the class for a few minutes, Abby felt right at home. She was bouncing up and down with excitement ... which I tried to capture on camera!
We thought joining all of the other kindergarteners from Roberts Elementary at Zoinks! (a place with nothing but bouncing machines) that night was a great idea. Abby (outfitted in her new Robert's t-shirt) had energy to spare, and she was very excited to hang out with her new friends. She can't WAIT until Monday for the first day of school.
It's not summer...
...without a lemonade stand. It was a rainy morning, and we had all of these cute Lemonade Stand things, that were given to Abby awhile ago. So yesterday morning (and throughout the day), we had a bit of fun with them. The kids kept themselves busy completing the banners, setting up shop, serving their customers ... and attempting to make change when they received payment. That was the funniest part of the whole thing ... you'd give a nickel for a 3 cent item and get a quarter back! Grammy and Daddy were very patient customers as we taught them some simple math. Unlike some of the teenagers working at restaurants in town ... at least Abby and Tyler serve with a smile!

Spell Tag
This is Abby's latest invention: SPELL TAG! They run around the house playing tag ... and when one catches the other, the "catcher" can turn them into anything they wish with their magic wand! Tyler's expression in this photo cracked me up. He seems to be putting quite a spell on me!
