Back to the Future

In late March, the kids and I hit the great outdoors for something that reminded me of my youth. A non-profit here in Tallahassee (I serve on their board) annually holds two drive-in movies. They set up the screen in a big field, sell concessions, and put on a festival full of children's activities to keep everyone occupied before the show starts. The kids had a blast ...
Don't let his face fool you, he really did enjoy himself! He's trying to look tough! The movie this time around was Back to the Future, which was a bit advanced for the kids, but I thought they could handle it. As you can see below, they got to see a DeLorean up close and personal before the movie started. But, nothing beat the look on their faces when I told them we would be watching the movie from the back of our car ... with the hatch up. What a novel concept! I can remember going to the drive-in movie all the time with my family, so this was equally as fun for me. Next time, all four of us will go!

Roberts Field Day

Last year, Abby was quite bummed that we missed her school "Field Day." So, Tyler and I made a point to be there this year ... but we arrived right in time for the refreshment break. I just love this picture though - the big kids looking out for the little guy. It was so much fun to watch Abby "compete" with her class (they are paired against another class throughout the afternoon) on a variety of obstacle courses, team sports (tug-o-war) and relays. Tyler - the top spectator! Although he kept saying he was hot. I recall saying, "It's a beautiful March day, Tyler, just wait until summer!" And, since I'm writing this several months later (in June), I know I was right. Told you so Tyler ... that heat was nothing compared to now!

Bye Bye Butterflies

Last spring, for her 6th birthday, Abby received a great gift from Dennis' parents - a butterfly "house" and certificate for caterpillars. But, when we eventually sent for them (taking vacations and such into account), they arrived D.O.A. (no joke!) because of the heat. We told Abby if she was patient, we'd find the perfect time to send off for a new batch ... and that time came this March. Abby and Tyler watched intently as the caterpillars matured (a.k.a. fattened themselves up), then made their chrysalides (see what remains of them in the shot below?) and emerged as Painted Lady butterflies.

After feeding them "butterfly baby food," a.k.a. sugary water presented on a flower, and keeping them inside for a week or so, we decided they needed some fresh air. Problem is ... they didn't want to leave! Abby and Tyler tried waiting for them to fly out of the netting, but they finally decided some coaxing was in order.
We tried one afternoon at first, and were only able to get two of the four to fly away. Unfortunately ... there was a casualty! I was inside (after growing impatient with our not-wanting-to-budge houseguests) when Tyler came running up to inform me that one of our butterflies had left the netting, only to be instantly gobbled up by a bird! NO JOKE! Trust me, it was very hard not to laugh at this little lesson on the Circle of Life. Fortunately, the kids took it all in stride! We will definitely raise butterflies again soon; it was a great lesson for all of us.

No Training Wheels!

The credit actually should go to Grammy and Grandan. We left the kids (and their bikes) when them in SouthWood one evening, and the next morning when we picked them up we were in for a surprise. Abby, who really hadn't gotten much of a chance to practice riding (it's very hilly in our neighborhood ... and so is our driveway!), took off without her training wheels and rode all the way down the street. She was quite tickled that she was able to trick us! Then Tyler, who was VERY wary about being without a parent's hand on his bike, took off on his training wheels like a pro. We were SO proud! Thanks G&G!
Oh, notice the Superman PJs? Tyler went through a period this winter/early spring where he had to wear these EVERY day ... over his clothes, to bed, whenever. It used to be a relief when they were in the wash!

Dr. Suess' Birthday

This picture really speaks for itself ... almost! Thing One (Abby) was away that evening, so I made breakfast for dinner for Thing Two (Ty) ... always a hit! We love to celebrate Dr. Suess' birthday, and what better way than with Green Eggs and Ham (we didn't have any of that, so we substituted turkey!) For those of you who don't know ... Thing One and Thing Two are from a Dr. Suess book. Tyler's a pretty good match - with physical appearance AND demeanor!

Boyfriend Bunco

Every February, the girls in my Bunco group invite the guys to play. We call it "Boyfriend Bunco," but since I don't have one of those ... I just take Dennis! :)It's hard to believe our Bunco group has been going since 2002! Julie, Jenn and I are three that have been around since the beginning ... Sabrena couldn't make it that night, but I guess we're a pretty fun group, because her husband (Screven) came stag. I think Dennis was trying to become his date here!Marc Smith, Beth and Chris Corum, and Lorie Smith ... taking a little "halftime" food and drink break. Marc had his "traveling to Chicago and need to keep warm" winter facial hair look going on!Jenn, Lisa and Kristin were attempting to join our hostess (Ginny - second from left), for a picture, when John and Andy crashed the party. This is their rendition of the "sorority pose" ... in other words, the half-bend, hands-on-the-knees thing girls do when they're posting for a group photo. Now, in order to understand the gifts for the evening, you need a bit of background. A couple years ago, Ginny was hosting a regular night of Bunco (not our February couples night), and she got delayed in South Florida. Her flight was going to be arriving late, so she called John and asked if he would pretty please get everything ready for the night. Having just watched Ginny prepare the house for a get-together they hosted the previous weekend, John knocked it out of the park: setting up tables, cutting azaleas from their yard for the tables, and prepping a full bar (!) for the Bunco gals. When a couple of Ginny's close friends arrived (at her request, to check on John's preparations before everyone came), they thought for sure John was hiding Ginny in a closet, because everything looked so good. Impressive!

But, the really great part came when that evening's prizes were passed out. Ginny hadn't had time to shop before her trip, so she asked John to pick up some nice bottles of wine or gift cards to Starbuck's, etc. But, John decided a trip to Walgreen's would be much more fun ... especially stuff from the "As Seen on TV" aisle. The prizes winners received in their brown grocery bag-wrapping paper - such as whoopie cushions and an oversized remote control - were hysterical to our tipsy crowd (remember we had been served by John the bartender all night. Usually the husbands make themselves scarce when the girls arrive). Ginny has hosted at least once since, and per our request, John is now her appointed prize purchaser. The prizes are always a highlight of the evening: the ShamWow!, Tater Mitts, Aqua Globes! This year, the first prize was a bit racy (to say the least), so Lisa was a bit cautious when opening her "bag." I don't remember what she got, but it, and all of the other gifts were a bit more tame (thank goodness!). Deavin got CaddyShack and some gopher traps... While Jenn won big with a blow-up swimming pool, outdoor patio lights and a box of Coor's Light (classy!)We always have a good time at the Dailey's house. Thanks John and Ginny for hosting a great Boyfriend Bunco!

Welcome 2010!

Dennis and I had a great time at the FSU New Year's Eve Party in Jacksonville ... we rang in 2010 by watching fireworks over the river. And, look who we ran into ...
It's Bobby! I'm actually surprised he was out so late ... considering the big day he had coming up at the Gator Bowl!
