...doesn't fall far from the tree. The apple being Abby and the tree me, I guess! Sorry for another post about Abby, but this one is funny. Yesterday, the kids were outside playing, and Abby called me over to the porch screen. "Mommy," she said. "I thought of a food craft!" Then she proceeded to explain how you would do it, step-by-step. I thought she had seen it in a book or magazine ... but it turns out my little gal had thought of this "food craft" (what we call fun recipes, a.k.a. playing with your food!) while she was in bed the night before. I told her we had all the ingredients needed and if she would like, she could show us how to make the recipe after dinner. Well, she did! Ladies and gentlemen: meet "Abby's Apple-Marshmallow People."

Abby - The Reading Fairy
Walk through this beautiful "fairy curtain" Abby received for Christmas (thanks Grammy and Grandan!) and there's a 95% chance you'll see Abby with her nose in some kind of book. I'm thinking of dubbing our little five-year old fairy, Tinkerbell, and her room "Never Never Comes Out" land," as she goes in there and gets lost in book after book ... after book!
This has been going on for a little while, but it hit fever pitch after Christmas. Abby received several chapter books for the holidays, and she wowed us by saying she had finished a couple soon after Christmas Day. Sure enough, we confirmed she had been reading them (with no problem I might add) to herself. Of particular interest to Abby are the Magic Treehouse books. We learned about these from Cousin Anna (who is a big fan of the series) and have been collecting them over the past year.
We got online to check out the series' website yesterday afternoon, and learned Abby can take quizzes on the Magic Treehouse books she reads. Furthermore, she can earn "stamps" for her "passport" as she completes books.
Since we've already read several together, I challenged Abby and told her she could earn the stamps when she reads the books on her own. So she pulled out all of her new MT books and the ones in her bookshelf and got busy. I must say, we were shocked. In the past two days, Abby has read FIVE books (and that's just the MT ones ... she has also read parts of a Rainbow Magic book and part of a Tinkerbell one, as well as several picture books out loud to Tyler).
Never thought I'd say this ... but I've actually started getting frustrated that she is reading TOO much. Crazy thing is, she is doing other things too. Both kids have spent a ton of time outside (we have some beautiful weather here) and Abby had soccer practice today (plus they've been playing ... bugging us, etc. etc.). She can seriously knock a book out in just over an hour! Okay, I'm done bragging. Thank you for indulging me. It's just so amazing to us and we wanted to share. If you come over and see Abby laying on her floor like this in a trance, don't worry ... she's not hurt ... she's just off in another world!

Right on Track
Dennis and Tyler are in LOVE with trains ... so it's no wonder that Tyler volunteered to help my "young at heart" hubby expand the Polar Express track the other night.

Those first three pictures were beauty shots taken by Dennis. You can do some cool things with the camera ... IF you know what you're doing. I don't (a possible New Year's Resolution?) but would love to learn. Anyway, these next two shots just capture the fun Dennis and Ty were having.
The track, that wrapped around the Christmas tree all season, was added to and stretched through both playroom doors. The boys had great fun watching The Polar Express go round and round. Too bad the Christmas decorations are coming down tomorrow. Guess she'll hit the rails again for Christmas 2009.
Happy New Year!
New Years Eve was fun ... but very kid-friendly here last night! We wrapped up 2008 with good family friends, then rung in the New Year in front of Dennis' favorite Christmas gift (see this post from earlier today). Abby and Emily (and Ty too) worked hard the other day preparing crowns for everyone to wear ...

The kids looked really cute in them, and the adults wore them ... reluctantly!

Even Auntie Jenn's friend, Brian, was a good sport! He donned his crown for the whole night and put up with our wild and crazy New Year's Eve party. Now, mind you, "wild and crazy" means children yelling and fighting over toys, babies crying, etc ... it was a different kind of party here!
And we made everyone work for their food too. Drinks were "grab your own" from the cooler (although Marc mixed up some yummy Chocolate Martinis), after dinner we had "Make-Your-Own Sundaes," and dinner was: a Salad Bar (notice the signs made by Abby)
And "Make-Your-Own" Personal Pizza ...
Since there was NO way our kids would have made it anywhere near midnight, we changed New Years to 8:00 p.m! I read somewhere that it's fun for kids to jump on bubble wrap (loud noises) to ring in the New Year, and while that was kind of a bust (I should have purchased the larger bubbles) the kids had no problem making noise with these balloon blowers!
Tyler did NOT care for the loudness (Dennis had to help him blow up the balloon WHILE Tyler held his own ears. And, poor Sarah Kate looked downright shocked!) ... but the girls had a blast jumping around and blowing their horns.
We had to steal them away eventually ... yes, even from Jenn and Brian (who were egging the kids on!)
After the big countdown, our families exchanged holiday gifts. Tyler just loves his Thomas goodies ... but it's equally fun to spend time with Marc (Tyler's godfather).
And Abby received Lite Brite from Emily! I don't know who was more excited, Abby or ME?!
I was a huge Lite Brite fan back in the day. And, even though Abby pleaded with us to give it a whirl last night, we opened the box this morning. Guess what? It's still fun! Thank you Smiths!
The kids looked really cute in them, and the adults wore them ... reluctantly!
We all crowded in the pantry (no windows) for the unveiling of the first design today, and the kids have completed a couple more designs since. Now, this just might sound weird to some of you ... but my favorite memory of Lite Brite is the textured side of a completed design sheet. I love how it felt ... and although the current model's paper is slightly different, it brought back memories!
Dennis' New Toy
I was waiting until we had it all set up ... but this will have to do. This year, Dennis' big Christmas gift (mostly to himself ... but actually to our whole family) was a new TV.
He did the research and ended up with this "little" thing ... which he unveiled on Christmas morning. The next day, we purchased a home for Dennis' new toy: a large entertainment center, which makes me happy because it fills the huge wall in our living room, and it somewhat helps the TV blend into our decor (i.e. my new floors - a.k.a. my Christmas gift to me and the family). Anyway, I have to admit ... HD is the way to go. We've really enjoyed watching the bowl games and today's Tournament of Roses parade!
Cocoa-Banana Bread
Holiday Recovery
These photos were from a day or two after Christmas, but they could have been from today as well. The day after a holiday (Christmas or New Year) is definitely time for taking it easy and picking up the rubble! We usually aren't home when the bright sun hits the breakfast room, but we've seen it several days running now. I was reading the paper, and the kids wanted to "read" the funnies. This is kind of how we looked, but YES, they started hamming it up once Dennis went to grab the camera.
Dennis painted our front and back porches early in the week/late this past weekend ... what a nice way to start the new year!
But, Bailey the cat didn't appreciate being cooped up indoors without a way to escape. If you've seen the way the kids love on this cat, you'd understand why he needs alone time on the porch now and then!
And I thought this picture would do Grammy's heart good! I went the whole Christmas holiday without cleaning out the "tupperware" cabinet ... much to my mother's chagrin! But, in my defense we were using the stuff fast and furious with all the leftovers, etc. Anyway, I couldn't stand it anymore! I couldn't bring myself to post the before picture. It would have been too embarrassing!
